European Newspaper Publishing Statistics

  • Within the EU, daily printed newspaper consumption stood at 21% in 2022. 
  • This has shown a gradual decline since 2012, when it was at 37%.
  • On average, 49% of Europeans trust the written press.
  • Across the UK, France, Spain, Germany and Italy, newspapers are the least used news source as of 2022.
  • As of 2021, Bild had an average print circulation of 1.15 million, selling more than all other German national daily newspapers.
  • As of 2023, the Metro had an average daily print circulation of 0.95 million, the largest of all newspapers from the UK.
  • Slightly lower, the Daily Mail had an average daily print circulation of 0.80 million during the same year.

  • As of 2023, the Metro had an average daily print circulation of 0.95 million, the largest of all UK newspapers.
  • Two years earlier, the Metro’s figures were considerably lower due to implementing a reduced circulation in response to Covid measures.
  • The Daily Mail had an average daily print circulation of 0.80 million, over 2.5 times greater than the third largest newspaper company.  
  • The Evening Standard (third) had an average daily print circulation of 0.31 million.
  • Over the given three year period, the average daily print circulation dropped year-on-year for the given companies, with the exception of the Metro.

Metro

  • As of 2023, the Metro had an average circulation of 0.95 million.
  • The Metro is owned by Daily Mail and General Trust plc (DMGT) and is considered a sister paper to the Daily Mail. 
  • It was originally launched as a London-only newspaper in 1999.
  • In terms of its pricing, The Metro is a free newspaper.
  • Its initial print run was 85,000 copies, with focused distribution throughout the London Underground.
  • As of 2020, its average print readership was 2.3 million.
  • 57% of the Metro’s readers are males. 

Daily Mail 

  • As of 2023, the Daily Mail had an average circulation of 0.80 million.
  • The Daily Mail’s website receives over 218 million unique visitors each month.
  • Between April 2019 and March 2020, the Daily Mail had an average monthly reach of over 36.2 million consumers in the UK.
  • As of 2020, 53% of its readership is female.
  • Demographically, its readers have an average age of 60. 

Evening Standard

  • As of 2023, the Evening Standard had an average circulation of 0.31 million.
  • In 2009, the newspaper was purchased for £1 by former KGB agent Alexander Lebedev and his son Evgeny Lebedev.  
  • Following their takeover, the Evening Standard became a free newspaper following a large history of paid circulation.
  • As of 2020, its average print readership was 1.2 million.
  • 63% of readers are male and the average reader is 41 years old.

Daily Mirror

  • As of 2023, the Daily Mirror had an average circulation of 0.28 million.
  • As of 2019, males make up 54% of its readership.
  • 42% of its readers are between 55 – 74 years old.
  • During the 1960s, its daily sales exceeded 5 million copies, which has not been repeated by any other daily non-Sunday British paper since (including itself).

Daily Express

  • As of 2023, the Daily Express had an average circulation of 0.18 million.
  • In 2018 the Daily Express was purchased by Trinity Mirror for £126.7 million. 
  • As of 2019, 57% of the Daily Express’ readership is female.
  • 42% of its readers are aged between 55 – 74 years old.

Bild

  • As of 2021, Bild had an average print circulation of 1.15 million.
  • As of 2020, Bild had an average digital circulation of 0.46 million.
  • Bild outsold all other German national daily newspapers during the year.
  • It also had the highest reach of all German national daily papers at 7.82 million readers per issue.

El Pais

  • As of 2022, El País had an average print circulation of 0.10 million.
  • Of the Madrid dailies, El País is considered to be a newspaper of record for Spain.
  • In the mid-1990s, El País created El País digital, its web edition.
  • In terms of its presence, El País is the highest read Spanish online newspaper. 

Le Figaro

  • As of 2020, Le Figaro had an average print circulation of 0.34 million.
  • As of 2021, Le Figaro had at least 0.30 million digital subscribers.
  • The newspaper has a reach of 1.7 million readers each day.
  • 55% of its readership is from the Paris region and less than 7% of its readers are from abroad.

Corriere della Sera

  • As of 2018, Corriere della Sera had an average print circulation of 0.21 million.
  • As of 2019, Corriere della Sera had an average digital circulation of 0.17 million.
  • The newspaper has a reach of 1.7 million readers each day as of 2021.
  • Corriere della Sera is one of Italy’s oldest and most read newspapers.
