- 52% of males have read at least one book in the last months and 48% haven’t
- 59% of females have read at least one book in the last months and 41% haven’t
- Generally, the older a Brazilan gets, the less likely they are to read
- 73% of 70-year-olds or older have not read a book within the last 3 months
- Whereas 84% of 11-13 years old in Brazil have read a book within the last 3 months
- Brazilians lose their love for reading in middle age but recover it to some extent as they get older
- 40% of 5-10 years say the main reason they read is for pleasure
- This rises to a high of 42% for 11-13 year olds
- It starts to fall for 14-17 years olds with only 29% stating that the main reason they read is for pleasure
- It continues to fall and gets to it’s lowest point with only 16% of 30-39 year olds reading for pleasure
- For 40-49 year olds it rises to 21% and continues to rise for 50-69 years with 23% reading for pleasure
- Finally, 25% of Brazilians aged 70 and older state that the main reason they read is for pleasure
- In 2011, 25% of Brazilians stated that they enjoy reading and this has risen to 30%
- 77% of readers wish that they had more time to read
