How to find anagrams with extra letters
When solving anagrams, the letters available to you in your word rack can frequently be combined with other additional letters to form new words, such as in Words With Friends. Many word games even feature blank tiles that score zero points but can be substituted for any letter in the alphabet, expanding the word length. This allows the player to pick up additional points through other additional letters used.
- To find anagrams that include extra letters with our solver, you should use the wildcard symbol “?”. By doing so, the solver will permit an additional letter to be included in the solutions given.
- A maximum of two wildcards can be used, granting two additional letters in total.
- As an example, searching for “TRAIN??” would allow the 7-letter words “ARTISAN” and “TERRAIN” to appear in the results.

Where to use the Anagram Solver tool
Designed with versatility in mind, the Anagram Solver tool can be used with traditional computers in addition to handheld devices, such as phones and tablets. Using the tool on a computer may prove to be easier when used simultaneously with an anagram game as it enables the user to switch seamlessly between tabs as necessary. However, handheld devices will allow word enthusiasts to solve anagrams in-between other activities. What’s more, the tool has a responsive design which allows for intuitive functionality across all supporting devices.
Can the Anagram Solver be used for words and letters?
Yes, the Anagram Solver can be used for both words and random assortments of letters. The tool will not force users to enter a dictionary-recognized term in order to search for anagrams. No special characters are permitted and users should only include the letters A-Z in the “Letters”, “Starts with”, “Ends with”, “Contains” and “Exclude” fields. Each solution given after creating a search will be a real word.
Benefits of solving anagrams
- Lying down when solving anagrams instead of standing up has been found to decrease the time taken to find solutions by an average of 12.33%.
- Mentally stimulating activities such as anagram solving can help reduce the effects of brain aging and cognitive decline.
- One study found that eight-hours spent playing an anagram-based video game during a month can improve older adults’ working memory.
- Anagrams are even used in cognitive therapy to help those that suffer with learning disabilities or cognitive impairments, as they can aid memory, language and problem-solving.
- People with high levels of vocabulary show links to achieving higher scores in anagram solving.
- However, those with lower vocabulary levels have mixed abilities when it comes to solving anagrams.
- Finding a solution to an anagram can increase the chance of remembering the created word, when compared to simply reading it.
- The perceived difficulty of the created word is not found to have an impact on its memorability.

- 19.03% of words are in an anagram class of 3 words.
- 6.28% of words are in an anagram class of 4 words.
- Increasing the number of words in an anagram class decreases a word’s likelihood of appearing.

Is the Anagram Solver cheating?
Whether or not the Anagram Solver is considered cheating will depend on what it is being used for. Typically the environment that the tool is being used in will determine whether a player is using it for foul-play or not.
- Tournament play: Use of word helper tools are prohibited during tournaments such as anagram quizzes or spelling bees as they provide an unfair advantage to those that use them.
- Against the computer: When playing a word game against a computer, anagram solvers are permitted. However, ensure to use them to aid your play, rather than using them for every turn. This will help you improve your word solving abilities.
- Against a human: For player-to-player games, word helper tools should be discussed and agreed to beforehand. By doing so, neither player will gain an unfair advantage over the other. Whether players agree or disagree with their use before the start of the game, the choice must be respected.
- Practice play: The Anagram Solver can be used as much as needed during training games. As the competitive element is removed, the tool can provide words for you to play that will help grow your own personal word bank.
What is an anagram?
- An anagram is the rearrangement of each letter word, phrase or name to form a different term.
- To be considered a true anagram, no additional letters should be added and no letters should be taken away.
- For example, “SPINE” can be an anagram of “PINES”.
- When solving anagrams, we promote our cognitive performance and mental agility through the contemplation of new solutions.
How to solve an anagram
There are many different methods that people use to solve anagrams. Three popular methods are given below:
- Split the word into a circle: Using a piece of paper or a computer application, split the word you would like to solve into a randomized circle of letters. Doing so will force you to prevent reading the word from left to right. It will also force your brain to come up with new patterns and possibilities.
- First letter and last letter: Identifying these can greatly improve your chance at solving an anagram. To do so, try placing different letter combinations at the beginning and end while muddling the remaining letters in the middle of the word.
- For example, “HPPAY BTHRIADY” is much easier to identify as “HAPPY BIRTHDAY”. This is due to the brain’s tendency to interpret each word as a whole rather than letter-by-letter.
- Use common pairings: Certain letters combine with other letters more frequently than the rest of the alphabet. Spending time to understand and create new words based upon these pairings can be hugely rewarding to anagram fanatics.
When solving 5-letter words, a higher number of syllables is linked to an increased anagram difficulty. Words that start with a vowel are shown to more frequently contain more than one-syllable and are generally found to be harder to solve.
What are some famous anagrams?
Some anagrams that are famous for having clever meanings that have an equal, similar or opposite relation to the meaning of the original word(s), such as those given below:
- “A GENTLEMAN” ➤ “ELEGANT MAN”
- “ASTRONOMER” ➤ “MOON STARER”
- “CONVERSATION” ➤ “VOICES RANT ON”
- “DEBIT CARD” ➤ “BAD CREDIT”
- “DORMITORY” ➤ “DIRTY ROOM”
- “FUNERAL” ➤ “REAL FUN”
- “LISTEN” ➤ “SILENT”
- “SLOT MACHINES” ➤ “CASH LOST IN ME”
- “SYCOPHANT” ➤ “ACTS PHONY”
- “THE EYES” ➤ “THEY SEE”
