About Yesterday’s NYT Strands

The best word puzzles teach you something about language. Wordle teaches you letter frequency. Connections teaches you to distrust your first instinct. Strands teaches you something slightly different: that words have shapes, and that your eye, given enough time, learns to find them.

The grid looks chaotic until it doesn’t. That’s the experience every Strands player recognizes: when the theme clicks, and suddenly the board that looked like random letters reveals itself as a precisely engineered set of interlocking paths.

The editors construct each puzzle so that every letter is accounted for, which means the grid contains no noise. Everything you see belongs somewhere. That knowledge, once you internalise it, changes how you look at the board entirely.

The Spangram is the puzzle’s master key. Find it and the chaos organises itself around it. Don’t find it and you can still solve the puzzle, but you’ll feel it working against you the whole way through.
