Strands is one of the 3 most popular NYT word games, played by millions of people every single day. Because of the specifics of the game, with changing solution patterns every day, it’s not easy to come up with the single most effective strategy to maximize success, although there are a few things you can do to make your job much easier.
For this reason, we decided to collect data from all previous puzzles and present some patterns, like the most used words, the usual length of spangrams, the longest theme words used in the game, and so on. Starting with the first Strands puzzle released on March 4, 2024, we’re presenting you with the most interesting statistics from previous puzzles.
Oh, and by the way – in case you’re stuck with today’s puzzle and need some push to get going, we have a daily Strands hits page to help you out. You should check it out and find some spoiler-free tips to solve every puzzle, along with hints for yesterday’s game and all past Strands answers since puzzle #1.
How many theme words are there in NYT Strands?
As of December 2025, with over 600 daily puzzles released, Strands players need to find between 4 and 8 theme words, depending on the puzzle. Daily puzzles with 6 theme words are the most common, while 4-theme word puzzles are very rare.
The following graph shows the distribution of daily Strands games based on the number of theme words in them:

Considering the constant number of letters in daily Strands puzzles (48), fewer theme words means they’re usually longer. And longer words are harder to find.
This is evident from the share of players who used hints for a daily puzzle – when a puzzle has only 4 theme words, fewer players use hints to discover them. However, when daily Strands has more theme words, players who DO use hints use more hints per puzzle.
In the following table, you can see how many players use hints, and how many hints the average player uses, depending on the number of theme words in a daily puzzle.
| Theme words in a puzzle | % of players using hints | Average hints used |
| 4 | 12.30% | 1.68 |
| 5 | 17.60% | 2.38 |
| 6 | 19.70% | 2.51 |
| 7 | 17.40% | 2.43 |
| 8 | 16.60% | 2.59 |
| Overall | 18.30% | 2.46 |
Naturally, the number of theme words also affects the ability of players to find spangram sooner or later. Fewer theme words correlate with more players finding spangram first, and vice versa.
While almost half of players manage to find spangram before any theme word in puzzles with 4 theme words, only a quarter of players manage to do so in 8-theme word puzzles:

Strands spangram statistics
Spangram is a word (or a phrase), spanning from one end of the Strands daily puzzle to the other. It can start on either side of the board, as long as it touches the opposite side.
Naturally, spangrams are long, usually much longer than theme words. Most spangrams consist of either one or two words, but in a few cases, spangrams can contain four words. You can see the distribution of word count in daily spangrams in the graph below:

So far, the shortest spangram featured in Strands was 6 letters long, while the longest one has 17 letters. The following table shows the distribution of spangram length in daily puzzles for the NYT Strands:
| Spangram length | % of puzzles |
| 6 | 7.40% |
| 7 | 8.20% |
| 8 | 15.40% |
| 9 | 15.20% |
| 10 | 18.70% |
| 11 | 12.60% |
| 12 | 9.40% |
| 13 | 6.30% |
| 14 | 3.50% |
| 15 | 2.00% |
| 16 | 1.10% |
| 17 | 0.30% |
You can see that in the most extreme cases, spangrams can “consume” over 1/3 of the game board. Depending on the player’s ability to find spangrams early, this can be either a big problem or an extenuating circumstance.
In case you wonder what the longest Strands’ spangrams have been so far, here is the table showing precisely that:
