There are 12,972 5-letter words in the English language and here you can find the complete list.

This leaves a lot of options for Wordle. The developer Josh Wardle made Wordle because his girlfriend enjoyed word games. It’s been suggested that they through the list and grouped the 12,972 5-letter words into groups according to whether Wardle’s partner did know the word, didn’t know the word or kind of recognized the word. 

This is rumoured to have left Wordle drawing from a list of 2,309 words.

S and E are the most popular letters that appear in Wordle solutions – so they would seem to be the best characters to try first when looking to get the answer.

Meanwhile, Z, X, J, and Q all appear in fewer than 1 in every 100 words. So it’s best to avoid these letters unless you are convinced that it makes sense to include them in one of your guesses.

Most popular letter in Wordle words by position

Position 1

There is a clear winner for the highest occurring first letter in Wordle – letter S.

12.23% of the time, S is the first letter of the Wordle of the day. That is well clear of C, B, and P that all occur more than 6% of the time.

Position 2

In position two you want to start targeting the vowels.

A is the most regular occurrence in position 2, closely followed by O, E, I and then U.

R is the most frequent consonant in position 2, but your best bet is to target a vowel.

In position 3, A again would be your best bet. Followed by R, I, O or N.

Q, J, H, and Z are again the letter to avoid in this position.

Position 4

In position 4, almost 1 in every 5 answers has an e in position 4. This is the 2nd most popular letter in any position, so it makes sense to either build your first guess around this or around S being in position 5.

You can also save yourself some trouble by not choosing Q at this position. There are no words in the Wordle solutions list that have Q as the 4th letter. 

Position 5

31.21% of all Wordle answers end in S. That is almost 1 in every 3 answers. So for your first guess, you must have an S in there somewhere, an E in there somewhere and an A in there somewhere.

Based on all this information, that’s why I usually settle for “STARE” as my starter word and take it from there. It has the most popular consonants and the 2 most popular vowels. It’s a good place to start.
