Each state’s favorite book

Pride and Prejudice is the most popular book in the USA. In fact, it is the most popular book in 21 of the 50 states, including 10 of the 12 most western states. The book was published in 1813, so it is interesting to see it is the nation’s favorite book today – more than 200 years later.

To Kill a Mockingbird boasts 14 states claiming to have it as their favorite book. There are bubbles in the south with Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina. Then another bubble in Indiana, Ohio, and Kentucky, then a final bubble moving up from Louisiana in the south, through Arkansas, Oklahoma, Kansas, and Nebraska.

Nine states state that the books of the Harry Potter series are their favorite books. This includes a bunch of states in New England and the northeast with Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, and Connecticut. Pennsylvania is another state in the general area with Harry Potter as their favorite book.

New Mexico, Rhode Island, and West Virginia have Where The Crawdads Sing as their favorite book. Published in 2018, it is one of the most recently published books that make the list. Verity by Coleen Hoover also makes a list as Alaska’s fav state. Interestingly, the two states not connected to the mainland US (Alaska and Hawaii) have unique favorite books. As mentioned, Alaska is the only state to favor the BookTok phenomenon Verity by Coleen Hoover, and Hawaii favors The Da Vinci code.

The other state with a unique favorite book is North Dakota with Paulo Coelho’s The Alchemist.

Interestingly, five of the seven books have been made into movies and Verity is believed to be in production. While the remaining book, The Alchemist, has been mooted to become a movie on several occasions but seems to be one of those projects that never get off the ground. This does indicate that Hollywood still has some power over people’s tastes. However, the reverse could easily also be argued.
